Photo opportunities

Some students enjoying a rare moment of sunshine in the garden, saying goodbye to some leavers.

Here we see (from the left) Shin, David, Yujin and Henry putting their skates on for Ice Skating at the Nike Ice Rink in Bristol as part of the social programme. Other activities enjoyed by the students this month include Laser Quest, guided tours, cinema trips and a day trip to Bath. Next week we go on a tour of the mysterious Wookey Hole caves!

New School Café

Dear Principal,
I think it’s a good idea to want to build a new student café in the school, students will probably be happy. I suggest that the café could open at 8.30am, students could come and have their breakfast, drinking some coffee and eating fruit or other. After lessons finish, the café could be open until 6.00pm, students could stay doing their homework together. For lunch I suggest Italian food which would be appreciated by a lot of people and you can propose some alcohol just for the lunch, like beer or wine. Also, have you thought about changing the décor? You could put some relaxing music on during lunch but I think not the afternoon if students want to work.

Yours sincerely,

‘It is much more important for women to be attractive than for men’, by Yujin Chong

Everybody wants to be beautiful since people have lived on earth. Standards of beauty have changed many times according to the time and place. Nowadays, it seems really extreme and severe because some people spend money on plastic surgery and cosmetics to be gorgeous. In the past, more women spend time and money on being beautiful but I do not agree with the statement because these days, there are so many men who have plastic surgery even though he is not an actor or model. They just want to look handsome and attractive like women. These kinds of people are called ‘metro sexual’ and the metro sexual people are increasing dramatically. In my opinion it has become much more important to be attractive for men as well recently.

Dame Barbara Hepworth 1093-1975
Concentration of Hands 1948 oil on panel

The picture attracted my attention because it reminded me at first sight of the drawing of a relief representing a procession on a classical Roman sarcophagus. The picture represents five people, surgeons and nurses during their work, after an operation. Their eyes are concentrated on an object lying in front of them which is not in the picture. I could well imagine that they are focussing their eyes on their patient who has died. Their eyes are vacant and they looked utterly exhausted. With the operation masks that cover more than half their faces they seem to have lost their individuality. They are only operators. Barbara Hepworth, as we learn from the caption, was a well known sculptor. She was allowed to take sketches during surgery. She worked out well and in a very plastic way the hands of the surgeons and their eyes. A certain scratching and scraping technique makes the figures look even more like sculptors. The dominating colour is ochre.

Tenerife Plane Crash Tragedy, by Maïga Idrissa Djibrilla

The worst disaster in civil aviation happened in Tenerife in 1979, 583 people were killed or injured. Two Boeing 474 jets collided on the runway. The Panaman Boeing 747 with 396 people on board was directed to Tenerife. A bomb exploded in the Las Palmas airport 2 hours before and the airport was closed. The KLM Boeing 747 had landed 45 minutes before in Tenerife airport with 248 people on board. Las Palmas airport was closed due to bomb alert. A few minutes before the crash, the controller of Tenerife tower informed all traffics that Las Palmas airport has just opened. Tenerife tower informed all traffics that Las Palmas airport has just opened. The controller told the Panaman Captain that he could speed up and takes off if he taxi just behind the KLM. There was a heavy fog covering the airport. The visibility decreased. Both aircrafts were still backtracking the runway but the Panaman 747 was lost because of the fog. The ControllerHad confirmed before that he should exist at the third taxiway. The Panaman Crew had just passed the third taxiway without seeing it. At the same time the KLM finished back-tracking and was performing the half-turn. When the Controller told the Panam pilot on runway to report runway clear, the KLM thought that he was clear for take-off. The Pilot forgot that another aircraft was still taxiing on the runway. The two planes collided on the runway. In the crash 583 people were killed, 64 people survived. The stressful situation is probably one of the causes.

Football—Saudi Arabia v Japan, by Hashim Al-Fawaz

First goal scored 34 minutes in, Japan’s first goal followed at 36 minutes in. Played at Hanoi.

In Hanoi, Saudi Arabia played against Japan. All people thought that Japan will win because Japan always won when they play against Saudi Arabia. Before this match, Saudi Arabia never won against Japan in the Asia club including the final matches which were in 1992 and 2000. However, the Saudi falcons broke the record and won yesterday 3-2 and went to the Final against Iraq next Sunday. Japan started to attack early and tried many times but no score. Saudi Arabia started to join the match in the 20th minute by the shoot which was from Yaser. Yaser came again and scored the first goal to the Saudi Arabia in the 34th minute but the Japanese players scored the equalizer after two minutes in the 36th minute by Yuji Nakazawas. After that the referee ended the first half. In the beginning of the second half the Saudi team scored the second goal which was a header by Malek Maath. Then Japan again scored the equalizer in the 53rd minute. However, Saudi Arabia refuses all the guesses and scored the third goal by Malek Maath in the last seven tournaments. And the match ended with a 3-2 to the Saudi Falcons and Saudi team will go to the final to play against Iraq next Sunday.

My heart is a sheet of paper
The teardrop fell into my heart
My heart is made crinkled
My heart remains stained
When will I fix my heart?
Who will fix my heart?

I had free days when I was with you,
Like clouds in the sky,
When I cry my eyes are like clouds,
Now I’m happy because today the sun is shining.

I get up very early,
I saw through the window,
That the weather was very lovely,
How I feel good,
I think I will have a lovely day.

Internal organ transplantation: informed consent or presumed consent? by Yujin Chong

With the progress of medical technology, there are a lot of people who are operated upon for the purposes of internal organ transplantation. So, many people can live longer and healthier than in the past. However, there is a dilemma between informed consent and presumed consent that is needed when people donate their internal organs.

Some people disagree with presumed consent because it can impair the dignity of a person. Sometimes it is abused without consent just because he or she is brain-dead. But in my opinion, if somebody dies suddenly and there are few possibilities to survive, then it is better to transplant another patient who is suffering from severe pain but who has a much higher likelihood of a donor. It can sound cruel but this is more worthwhile. However, it should always be treated cautiously because a human life is very important and precious and there is just one life per person. I am in favour of presumed consent but informed consent is also valuable to encourage because it is more ethical.

In conclusion, every health care system or government has to pay more attention to organ transplantation to make the world a better place to live in.

Vegetarian or Carnivore? by Shin Ho

Today many people are changing types of food. They have a lot of reasons. Some people change in order to lose weight, others people change because they hate killing cows, pigs, chickens, sheep etc. Also there are many reasons. My teacher Sean is a vegetarian. He think Vegetarian is healthier than Carnivore and vegetables are safer than meat. However, are these reasons really reasonable? I will write down my opinions.

In the first place, really can weight be lost? Of course if you ate vegetables, you could be slim. But after you cut off dieting, if you will eat again, you put on weight. That is why if you have eaten during diet span, you don’t decrease muscles (These burn kcal, mainly). Of course, if you continue to eat just vegetables, that is OK. But if you eat vegetables for 3 or 4 months, you have to remember that.

Furthermore, really will vegetarianism decreases to killing animals? I am sure they never do that because mankind has eaten animals for a long time but vegetarians appeared less than 500
years ago. Moreover, if we don’t eat anymore, their number will decrease sharply because animals take up a lot of space, but we need space where we live. Lastly, really is the vegetable healthier than meat? I can speak confidently. NEVER!!! It is impossible. The most vital ingredient in meat is protein and fat but we don’t find them in vegetables. Some people think too easily that fat is bad. But it also is important for our bodies. Therefore I object to vegetarianism because of these reasons. I think that people have to eat everything except other people.

London Trip, by Shin Ho

I visited London Saturday. We (students and teacher) met in Bristol bus station at 8 o’clock. But I had to go to the school building because Arslan, Ahmad and Benoit didn’t know where it is. So we promised to meet at the school Friday. After I met them, we went to the bus station. When we arrived there, the people had already got there. The teacher checked the people but she didn’t find Saud, Henry and Saudo. Fortunately, just saudo got on the bus before the bus departed. But I couldn’t reach him on the phone. Saud was called by Ahmad. Luckily Ahmad could reach Saud on the phone, but Saud didn’t come. Friday we drank alcohol and went to a night club. But I went to home early, but most people stayed late. I heard Henry got back home at 3 o’clock AM. So Saud was later than Henry. On going to London by the bus, I answered the phone to Henry. He wanted to go to London and to meet us there. I told the teacher’s mobile number to Henry. Then I felt more and more my eyes close. When I woke up, I had already been in London. After we got off the bus, the teacher asked us to think of places we wanted to visit. The teacher decided to go to Buckingham Palace. We headed there. We reached there on foot in about 15 minutes. I was surprised there because there were a lot of people. I felt that they didn’t just keen on visiting there because there weren’t only people but also too many policemen. I asked the reason teacher why there were lots of people. She didn’t know either. So she asked that the policemen for the reason. After she talked with them, she told us the reason. She said ‘today is the queen’s birthday!!!!’ I was so pleased! We were determined to wait for her. But although we waited for 30minuts, she didn’t appear. As we (Arslan, Ahmad and me, waited for her, we joked. For example, ‘what is her mobile number?’ next 1year will she come here?’ and etc. on joking, finally parade started. Fist coaches that were drawn the parade by horses passed by us. Next, horse troopers passed. They looked proud. Last the army band walked by us. Finally, the Queen passed by us. Then I could see the Queen, directly. Bur against my expectation, she was really small and didn’t have on long white dress. Also critically, she didn’t have on Queen of Crown. So I was disappointed with her. After I saw her, I thought everything was finished. But then suddenly, it rained and the Air Show started. One by one jet plane of parties flew over. Last it made perhaps a red, white and blue behind them. The teacher asked us which place where we wanted to next, but we didn’t have enough time because we spent a lot of time at Buckingham Palace. So we decided to go to London Bridge. After we went there but I went another restaurant which I had passed by. There were waffles!! It tempted me! So I bought one plain waffle and sandwich. I was very satisfied and happy because I had been very hungry for walking around London. After we filled up our stomachs, we headed to London Bridge. On going there I could see a lot of sight. We had free time for about 30 minutes. Ahmad took a picture of me. It was quite funny. It I have a chance, I can show you. My feet were so tired, as well as other people’s feet. I suggested we sit down on chairs. After I had rest time, I went to the meeting place in order to meet the teacher and the other students. After we met them, we returned to the bus station. When we reached it, we met Henry. He came to London in order to get his baggage. I got on the bus, so my trip around London was finished.
